Idempotency keys for Shopify apps and integrations (so retries do not duplicate money moves)

A plain-English guide to idempotency for refunds, captures, fulfilments, and inventory writes — the guardrail that separates professional integrations from scary ones.

Retries are normal — duplicate side effects are not

Shopify, carriers, payment providers, and your own workers will retry things. If your integration treats every retry as a brand-new action, you will eventually:

  • double ship,
  • double refund,
  • double notify,
  • or double adjust stock.

Idempotency means: “If this exact intent already ran, do not run it again.”

Where idempotency matters most

Highest risk:

  • refunds and partial captures,
  • inventory adjustments tied to fulfilment,
  • creating labels or fulfilments downstream,
  • financial exports / ERP posts.

Medium risk:

  • customer updates,
  • tagging workflows,
  • ticket creation (unless duplicates are harmless).

Implementation shape (conceptual)

You need a stable key derived from the business intent, not from random timestamps. Examples:

  • Shopify order ID + operation name + target system reference,
  • a client-supplied key you persist and check before executing.

Store outcomes, not just “we called the API”.

When a custom app is the right container

Server-side idempotency and audit logs are easiest when you own a durable execution environment — often a custom app rather than a spreadsheet + script.
