Hiring a Shopify developer in South Africa: questions that reveal quality (not buzzwords)

A practical interview checklist for founders and ops leads — focused on reliability, ownership, and how a developer behaves when Shopify, carriers, and payments misbehave.

The goal is not a genius — it is a professional

Shopify development is not only Liquid templates. At scale, it is data integrity, permissions, integrations, performance, and calm incident response.

These questions surface whether someone has done real production work — not whether they memorised buzzwords.

Integration and webhooks

Ask for a concrete example of:

  • a duplicate webhook event and how they prevented double side effects.

If they cannot explain idempotency in plain language, keep digging — or read our primer: idempotency keys and reliable webhooks.

Admin API and operational jobs

Ask how they would run a large metafield backfill safely.

You are listening for: batching, backoff, checkpoints, and monitoring — see Admin API bulk ops.

Theme performance under real content

Ask how they stop editors from accidentally shipping a slow homepage.

You want section discipline and guardrails — not “we will optimise later”. See section architecture and storefront speed.

Support and handover

Ask what they deliver at the end: docs, runbooks, access ownership, and training.

If the plan is “you will figure it out”, you bought a liability.

Red flags

  • “We never look at logs.”
  • “Shopify handles all edge cases.”
  • “We always recommend rebuilding the theme from scratch.” (Sometimes true — often a smell.)

If you want a team instead of a solo hire

That is what we are: Shopify developer South Africa with integrations, automation, and internal tools in the same delivery muscle.

Next step

Send your stack and the role you are trying to fill (theme, app, integrations). We will tell you honestly where we fit — or who to hire instead.
